A Comparative Study of English and Chinese in Politeness Abstract：Politeness, As a universal phenomenon in society, its main functions are maintaining social order; maintaining friendly interpersonal relations; reducing conflicts and misunderstandings by means of polite speech acts as to attain the aim of communication. Different cultures may lead to different pragmatic politeness. The comparative study of English and Chinese in politeness can help English learners in China to learn English language well, and improve their abilities of intercultural communication.?Based on the ideas of Brown and Levinson, two famous English linguists, and the works of domestic authorities, this article makes a comparative study of English and Chinese in politeness from pragmatic angle, thereby highlights their culture differences in the use of language, and proves that these culture differences are of great importance in cross-cultural communication and in FL teaching. The writer thinks that different cultures may lead to different pragmatic politeness. The comparative study of?English and Chinese in politeness can help English leaners in China to learn English language well, and improve their abilities of intercultural communication.
