第四、五章 增词、减词与重复 4.1 增词法概说 增词法就是在翻译时按意义上（或修辞上）和句法上的需要，增加一些词来更忠实、通顺地表达原文的思想内容。这当然不是无中生有地随意增词，而是增加原文中虽无其词而有其意的一些词。 增词 4.2 语法上的需要 (1) 英语时态 (p33) eg. be doing 目前、正在…… have been doing 一直在…… 增词 But over the last several years, China has been seeking to resume its contracting party status. 译文：近几年来，中国一直在争取恢复其缔约国的地位。 分析：在汉语中，动词是无法体现出时态的，汉语中往往是通过增加虚词（如“正”、“在”、“着”等）的方式来体现动词的时态的。因此，在英译汉时，为了体现出英语原文中动词的时态，需要增加词语。 First of all, it seems that a successful scientist is full of curiosity… He is skeptical--- he does not accept statements which are not based on the most complete evidence available. 首先，成功的科学家似乎总是充满好奇心。他习惯于怀疑——除非是建立在现有的充分证据之上的论述，他才接受。 (分析：文中两个is都是一般现在时，英语的一般现在时用来表示在反复发生的或习惯性的动作，所以译为汉语时加“总是”和“习惯于”) 4.2 为了表达的清晰和自然而增词 Commission depends on the quantity of goods ordered.  佣金多少取决于订货量大小。（增词使译文语意完整，更符合汉语表达习惯） 3. 为增加背景知识或文化知识而增词 如：国别 地理位置 宗教信息 隐喻 例：华清池龙吟榭 Long Yin Xie (a pavilion built specially for emperors to recite poetry) in the Hua Qing Pool Chinese English 内地的改革开放促进了与港澳地区的经济关系，除了贸易外，还在相互的资金、生产和技术合作与交流规模上不断扩大和深化，使得两地经济联系突破传统的贸易单一格局，呈现出多元化发展的趋势。 The open-up policy and reforms adopted in the Chinese mainland have spurred its economic links with Hong Kong and Macao.
