Represents the deepest questions one might ask about the world and life, and the corresponding answer to those questions Who or what am I? Why am I in the world? What is reality? Are humans and animals the same? What makes up a worldview? Assumptions Values Beliefs World View Assumptions How is Worldview Different from Culture? Worldview is specific to an individual Culture is a component of worldview People of one culture have similar worldview People of similar cultures may or may not have similar worldviews Culture vs. Worldview What makes up a worldview? Is it a invisible or visible dimension of culture? It is like a set of map-making rules (not a map in itself). We see a map (how we see the world), but it was the rules that determine what we see. Is this map upside down or right side up? Definition Worldview is the ever-changing set of core assumptions upon which we build the cultural map through which we understand the world around us “A culture’s orientation towards God, humanity, nature, questions of existence, the universe and cosmos, life, suffering, sickness, death and other such philosophical issues” Worldview With your group, list as many worldviews (religions and philosophical schools) as you can in 2 minutes. Historical worldviews: Animism, Judaism, Hinduism, Confucianism, Daosim, Buddhism, Christianity, Islam Modern worldviews: Marxism, Post-moderism, Englightenment, Scientific Rationalism Something to remember: While not everyone who holds these religions/worldviews is the same, some basic components are the same.
