It causes the volume of coatings to increase, and can alter their viscosity (In particulare for inks). Foam can be more than just a nuisance during the manufacture of coatings, it can reduce the efficiency of mixing, make it more difficult to pump material through the lines, and greatly decrease the rate of through-put if a the formulator first has to wait until all the trapped air has dissipated from a coating before he can fill his drums to the required weight. When it comes to the point of application, foam in the liquid medium may affect the spraying pattern of automotive coatings for example, the brushing viscosity of paints and varnishes, and in the printing process may bring the entire procedure to a halt. If foam in the liquid is not dissipated before the coating has dried, may produce surface defects in the cured film. These effects are irrevocable, once defects are present in a coating they are there to stay. * Here are two of the most common types of defect associated with foam. 1.) Craters are formed when bubbles on the surface of a coating burst, and the coating dries before it has had a chance to form a smooth surface again. 2.) Pinholes are formed when a small bubble within the film bursts, and the film dries immediately afterwards, leaving a channel in the coating which extends from the surface of the substrate to the surface of the film. These tiny holes provide an area of exposure, which reduces the protective nature of a coating, not to mention the disastrous effect it has on its appearance. Pinholes are dreaded by the automotive industry, for example, which has such high appearance specifications that only one defect over an area of say a metre square is unacceptable. Even if the pinholes themselves are too small to see, the overall effect will be a reduction in gloss….example for gloss reduction due to defects in t
