The government said Thursday that 414,000 jobless workers sought their first unemployment compensation, 2,000 more than the previous week. The number of claims suggested that U.S. employers are not laying off significant more workers, but not hiring more either. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development says the economic recovery is close to stalling in the major industrialized nations. Experts from the OECD published the economic assessment Thursday in Paris, and also said growth remains strong in most emerging economies, but at a more moderate pace.
