Unit 8 Sentence Stress in English (I);Sentence stress is the relative degree of force given to different words in a sentence. In general, in a sentence, content words are stressed, but function words are unstressed. Content word: A word, such as a noun, verb, or adjective, that has a statable lexical meaning, rather than indicating a syntactic function, as a function word does. 实词:有可陈述的语汇意义,例如名词、动词或形容词,而不是如同虚词一样地指示句法功能的字 Function word: A word, such as a preposition, a conjunction, or an article, that has little semantic content of its own and chiefly indicates a grammatical relationship. Also called ?form word ,functor 功能词:如介词、连词或冠词等一类主要用于指明一种语法关系的语义很虚的词;Content word: giving information about who, what, when, where, why, how expressing the main idea or content of the phrase or sentence Function word: connecting the content words to form grammatical sentences. ;Content words are usually stressed:;Function words are usually unstressed:;Unit 23 Sentence Stress in English (II);The stressing of some content words:;The stressing of some function words:;Function words are usually unstressed in a sentence. Verbs that may be used as auxiliaries: 1. the affirmative forms (肯定形式) of ‘be’ and auxiliary verbs are stressed in tag questions(附加疑问句) (e.g. She isn’t a doctor, is she?) and at the beginning of questions (e.g. Have you finished?) (see exercise 1.5); 2. ‘may’ ‘might’ are stressed when indicating possibility (e.g. This may or may not be true.) (see exercise 1.7). Conjunctions: when the conjunctions have an emphatic meaning (e.g. although, even if/though), they are stressed. (see exercise 1.8) ;Sentence containing repeated words: when a sentence contains a word that has just been used, that word is generally unstressed. (e.g. –How many times have you been there? –Three times) (see exercise 2.1-2.6)
