Unit 9 Facing Emergency Our life does not always take place as planned. Instead, we may face all kinds of emergency situation. Some knowledge of the so-called first aids proves very helpful. It is helpful not only because we will benefit from it ourselves, but also because others may get out of trouble as a result of our help. In this unit, you will: share some useful information about the situation of facing emergency; acquire some common words and patterns for talking about emergency; get some practical ideas about the use of classification in text organization; learn some basic differences between “help/ assist”, “receive/accept” and “situation/occasion”; find some important tips on how to write a letter of request. Part 1 Listening and Speaking A. Listen to the following dialogue and answer the questions below: Where is the smoke from? Is it barbecue smoke? Who called 911 in the dialogue? Where does Steve live? What is the relationship between Steve and Mr. Riley? Steve: Did you smell something here? Sue: Yes, I was in the kitchen. I thought I could smell smoke. Steve: Me, too. Where is it coming from? Sue: I can’t see anything. Wait! What’s that over there? Steve: It’s smoke. Whose house is that? Sue: That’s the Riley’s house. They’re on vacation. Steve: It doesn’t really look like it’s coming from their house. It’s coming from the back. Is it a barbecue? Sue: No way. It’s a fire. I’m going in to call the fire department. Steve: Wait. I have my cell phone. I’ll dial 911. Voiceover: Fire department. Can I help you? Steve: Yes, I want to report a fire. Voiceover: Where are you, sir? Steve: I’m at 904 Lincoln Drive. I think there’s a fire in one of my neighbor’s houses. Voiceover: Alright. We’ll get someone there right away.
