He was more than a printer of other people’s writing. He himself translated into English and edited many of the books which he printed, and he provided a considerable number of prefaces and commentaries. (The Medieval tale of King Arthur.) Caxton had been a leading member of the English merchant community in Bruges for much of his life and had presumably brought the manual back to England with him. Perhaps his experience in the textile trade in Flanders convinced him that there was a marker for English, and he may have wanted to do his former associates a good turn by promoting their languages. There is no doubt, however, that he had the commercial needs of his learners in mind.
