With this experimental truck factory, Volkswagen is sure that it has found a system that will reduce the number of defective parts, cut labor costs, and improve efficiency. Because VW’s potential market is small, this is a relatively small plant, with scheduled production of only 100 trucks per day with only 1,000 workers. However, only 200 of the 1,000 work for Volkswagen. The VW employees are responsible for over quality, marketing, research, and design. The other 800, who work for suppliers such as Rockwell International, Cummins Engines, Delga Automotiva, Remon, and VDO, do the assembly work. The objective of the new supply chain Volkswagen’s innovative supply chain will, it hopes, improve quality and drive down costs, as each subcontractor accepts responsibility for its units and worker compensation. With this strategy, Volkswagen subcontractors accept more of the direct costs and risks. As the schematic shows, at the first stop in the
