Italian Wine Educational: environment, history and viticulture-oenology techniques Milan, 3rd – 28th August 2015 Italian Wine Educational promoted by: Supported by: Special thanks to: LAZIO Lazio Civitella d’Agliano IGT Production area Civitella d’Agliano IGT The production area of IGT Civitella dAgliano includes the hole territory of Civitella dAgliano in the province of Viterbo. Located in the heart of central Italy, Lazio is extended from the central Apennines to the Tyrrhenian Sea. The region mostly hilly (about 54%), is the result of a long geological history among sea, large volcanoes and fluvial activity. Geography and environment The plains, extended from Tuscany to Campania, are mainly coastal and occupy about 20% of the territory. The mountains occupy about 26% of the territory. The vineyard area covers more than 25,000 ha and produced nearly a half million hectoliters of wine. History The north part of the region, around Lake Bolsena, we are in the land of the Etruscan mystery. Etruscans introduced viticulture in Lazio, using lively support like olive or cherry trees. Pliny writes that these lands were fertile and produced excellent wines. In the area of Castelli Romani the vine has always found favorable conditions. During the first centuries of Roman civilization, when wine was imported from Campania and Greece, the only appreciated local wines were those of Alba Longa, today called Albano Laziale . Decline of Western Roman Empire followed by the Barbarian invasions, declared the beginning of a dark period of viticulture in Lazio, which saw the light again in 1500. In fact, on the hills of Lake Bolsena (VT), the Farnese princes cultivated the vineyards which gave the famous wine Moscatello of Montefiascone. Around Albano Laziale we have evidence of the production of wines with bubbles already in 1500. After this period another dark age for wines followed in 1700-1800.
