Introduction As we all know, English is widely spoken in today’s world. In many countries, it is used as their mother tongue or official language. With the development of global economy and culture, the international communication is becoming more and more frequent. As a commonly used language, it is necessary for non-native English speakers to have a good command of English speaking, listening, vocabulary and intercultural communication. Meanwhile, in China, as a foreign language, English is one of the obligatory courses each student has been learning from primary to college. Also, Chinese government attaches great importance to the study of English. However, the current situation of Chinese students’ learning English is not so optimistic that more and more problems have been arising, such as inaccurate pronunciations, lack of interests, inadequate practice of speaking and listening and inappropriate English use. To solve all these problems, an effective English learning method is urgently needed. English learning is indeed influenced by many factors. Among them, motivation and learning strategies are two main factors (Tao, 2012; Zhou et al., 2005).背景 In the professional literature of English language education, there are lots of discussions about the relationship between learning English and watching English movies (Jane, 2002; Lin, 2009; Wood, 1995). People generally think that watching English movies can improve Chinese students skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, as well as leaning motivation. However, little empirical research has been conducted about the real value and significance of movie-watching in Chinese students English language learning. Thus, the author did a survey by using questionnaires to explore students’ attitudes towards learning English by watching English movies and investigate the current situation of students for using English movies in their English learning.
