Abstract Purpose: 1.explore the impact of a permanent stoma on patients’ everyday lives 2. gain further insight into their need for ostomy-related education. Subjects and Setting: 1. 15 persons with permanent ostomies. 2. the surgical department at a hospital Abstract Methods: 1.Focus group interviews 2.a phenomenological hermeneutic approach 3.Data were collected and analyzed using qualitative content analysis Results: 1.Stoma creation led to feelings of stigma, worries about disclosure, a need for control and self-imposed limits.
