Bridge culture of Shaoxing ShaoXing is one of the noted historical and cultural cities in China, in possession of a long-standing culture of ancient yue Kingdom. As is known to us all that the bridge is an essential component of yue, Shaoxing gains its reputation at home and abroad with various, splendid bridges. So it’s definitely true that “millions of well-known bridges come from the state of yue”. There are dense and scattered waterways within Shaoxing, then mass construction of bridges become a necessity. It this way, Shaoxing is comparable to Venice. During the reign of Emperor Guangxu of the Qing Dynasty, there were 229 bridges in the city, while the proportion of the city was 7.4 square meters. These bridges connected each street with each abbey, which reflected the image “ No bridge, then no city, no street and no villeage”. Shaoxing is abundant in the variety and proportion of bridge. It was estimated that there had been 10610 bridges in Shaoxing by the end of 1993.Among them, old bridges gained the most percentage. No wonder that Shaoxing is one of the regions which possess the most old bridges, ranging from wooden bridge, Timber Arch bridge fitting river and lake to floated bridge fitting great rivers, and to stone bridge, triangular bridge, pentagonal bridge, septangular bridge, semicircular arch bridge, lecotropal stone arch bridge, elliptic stone arch bridge, and even to accurate catenary arch bridge which is at the top of the world. This complete series of old bridges become the story of the evolution of Chinese old bridge. So Shaoxing is referred to as “ a museum of old bridge”. Among the exising 604 old bridges in Shaoxing, the bridge dates back to Song Dynasty is 13, 41 before Ming Dynasty and 550 in Qing Dynasty.
