To improve students’ perceptions of MIS (to develop an appreciation for its importance to businesses) To increase the number of MIS majors To make the course a great learning experience Issues and problems Students may have perception that MIS is “all about technical topics” and that most MIS jobs are being outsourced so there is no point in majoring in MIS. Textbook material focuses too much emphasis on memorization of terms; there is a failure to see relevance, results in low attendance levels. Students have an expectation that they should be entertained therefore the traditional teaching mode using lecture with limited discussion is not well-tolerated. Idea #1: change course objectives Less emphasis on technical issues, more emphasis on learning the supportive roles that IT can play in business organizations. More emphasis on the human side of systems usage and implementation More emphasis on IT careers New course objectives To develop an appreciation for the potential benefits that IT can provide to organizations who must employ innovative and effective strategies to sustain competitive advantages in the Internet economy. To understand the role that MIS professionals play in helping organizations realize the potential benefits that IT can provide. To gain experience with using collaborative technologies.
