Literary Techniques Employed to Develop Celies Character in The Color Purple   【Abstract】In 1982, Alice Walker’s The Color Purple, was published and became one of the best sellers. As the novel progressed, Celies acquiescent behavior transformed into one of resilience and dignity. By incorporating the literary techniques of tone, symbolism, and juxtaposition into her novel, Alice Walker was able to develop Celies character, emphasizing her progression from subservience to independence.   【Key words】Literary techniques; Tone; Symbolism; Juxtaposition; The Color Purple   1 Alice Walker’s The Color Purple   In 1982, Walker published her most famous novel, The Color Purple. For the novel, which chronicles the struggle of several black women in rural Georgia in the first half of the twentieth century, Walker won the Pulitzer Prize and the American Book Award. The color Purple, Alice walker shows how a uneducated, fourteen-year-old black girl living in rural Georgia between 1910 through 1940, can overcome years of abuse, and betrayal and become an independent, confident woman. Celie faces racism and sexism, female relationships and the disruption of traditional gender roles.   2 Literary Techniques in The Color Purple   2.1 Tone   Tone serves as an important device in personifying a novels character. Such is the case in The Color Purple. In her subservient state, Celie responded little, if at all, to the abuse she was exposed to. For instance, Celie stated in a despondent tone that whenever she had been forced to enter into sexual intercourse, she would apathetically yield, allowing either her Pa or Mr. ______ to git up there and enjoy himself just the same. No matter what Im thinking. No matter what I feel. It just him. Heart feelings don’t even seem to enter into it. Celies continual surrender was marked by hopelessness.
