Learning Guide for: CHCIC10C ESTABLISH AND IMPLEMENT PLANS FOR DEVELOPING RESPONSIBLE BEHAVIOUR Teacher – Kim Anderson The language of behaviour Children indicate the way they are feeling by their behaviour. Behaviour can be either ‘good’ or ‘bad’ but, when people talk about children’s behaviour, they are usually thinking about when the child isn’t behaving in a way they would like. Behaviour comes with its own terminology and this has changed over time. Words like ‘discipline’, ‘naughty’, ‘punishment’ and ‘misbehaviour’ have commonly been used over generations. The term ‘disciplining children’ implies that children are naturally ‘naughty’ and that their behaviour has to be controlled. A ‘punishment’ is an action taken by adults with the goal of reducing or eliminating the behaviour. Terms like ‘misbehaviour’ or ‘inappropriate behaviour,’ tend to focus on the behaviour and judge it rather than seeking the reasons behind it. Quite often, when a child is behaving in an uncooperative way, this is a reaction to the fact that an adult is not responding sensitively to the child’s basic needs. Find out and provide what is needed and the child will be cooperative. ‘Behaviour management’ and ‘behaviour guidance’ are terms that are in current use. The word ‘management’ sounds judgemental. Are children naturally naughty beings who need to be managed? ‘Guidance’ is a more positive word in the context of behaviour as this implies that children are encouraged to express their feelings in a responsible way with consideration for the needs and feelings of other people. So saying, it is impossible to avoid using all terminology that may imply a judgemental meaning agenda and still make it clear what you are talking about! Therefore, just be aware of this as you read through these learning materials. Be aware of the need to take a positive stance.
