On the Social Powers of Deciding Tess’ Tragic Fate   Abstract:“Tess of the d’Urbervilles” is one of the realistic books of Thomas Hardy. The heroine Tess is the outstanding female image created by Hardy and also an idealized artistic model. Her fate represents the beauty of the book and brings the readers aesthetic feeling. By analysing the character background and the special social conditions depicted in the novel, we can see the social powers of deciding Tess’ tragic fate.It results in the typicalness and inevitability of Tess’ fate. Hardy’s realistic thought about the society and his progressive ideas ,which arouses attention of the readers. In Hardy’s ideal world, Tess is the symbol of beauty and the embodiment of love, who represents all the good aspects of the Wessex people---prettiness, purity, simplicity and honesty, kindness and tolerance. Her pride and loyalty are important qualities which help lead to her tragedy.   In the novel, Hardy’s exposure and criticism to the bourgeois goes into a new depth and width. By describing the two main male images---Angel Clare and Alec d’Urberville, this kind of depth and width is strengthened. Here we can understand that the direct social power decides Tess’ tragic fate.   2 About Angel Clare,the bourgeois intellectual   Angel Clare,who is the youngest child of a poor parson, is the tupical image of liberal bourgeois intellectual. As a youth, he shows great promise, yet of the three sons he is the only one not to attend the university.
