Unit 3 Text B Michelangelo Buonarroti: Son of Florence 1 There are few artists today who have such name recognition that a full name is not necessary. Along with artists such as Leonardo, Picasso, or Van Gogh, Michelangelo was such an artist. He was born in 1475 in the nearby village of Caprese but always considered himself a “son of Florence.” Florence, Italy, is considered the home of the great painter, poet, architect, and sculptor. It’s easy to look around and find his influence on the city. His tomb is displayed prominently alongside those of Machiavelli and Galileo, and many of his most famous works of sculpture are housed throughout Florence—including, the magnificent statue of David. 2 Michelangelo is one of the most inspired creators in the history of art and, with Leonardo da Vince, the most potent force in the Italian High Renaissance. As a sculptor, architect, painter, and poet, he exerted a tremendous influence on his contemporaries and on subsequent Western art. 3 Some of Michelangelo’s greatest achievement parallel important developments in his life. His sense of local patriotism inspired one of his grandest and most noted works, the gigantic statue of David, which he carved between 1501 and 1504. It was done to inspire the people of Florence who were at the time, facing adversity from outside threats to the city. The Biblical character of David was a symbol to the people of the weak with God’s help fighting the Goliath—like forces who were threatening the city. 4 In 1505 Michelangelo was recalled to Rome Pope JuliusⅡ for two commissions. The most important was for the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel ceiling. Between 1508 and 1512, working high above the floor while lying on his back on scaffolding, Michelangelo painted some of the finest pictorial images ever, including such scenes as God Separating Light from Darkness and the Creation of Adam.
