Among gravity separation techniques, dense medium separation is one of the most prevalent processes. This is commonly termed float-and-sink analysis and/or specific-gravity fractionation. The specific-gravity fractions are dried, weighed, and analyzed, generally for ash content. Other analyses, such as sulfur content, are also conducted, depending on the end use of the washed coal. A table is compiled showing the weight percent of each specific-gravity fraction together with the analyses of each fraction.
