In-Circuit Test (ICT) is an electrical test that is conducted on manufactured printed circuit boards (PCB’s) with components loaded. ICT requires a bed-of-nails (probe contact) to each circuit node on the board. The nails allow access to every node on the PCB so that each component on the PCB can be individually controlled and tested. The primary function of ICT is to detect any defects caused by the manufacturing process, thus a structural test by electrical means. As ICT in most case is able to isolate and test each individual part the failure diagnostics is to the individual device and to individual pin level, thus an operator could easily repair or replace the part that is deemed a failure. ICT ability to power up the board and perform vector tests (although at slower speeds than the PCB is designed for) gives users some level of confidence on the functionality of the board.
