The first chapter“Introduction” presents the writer Thomas Hardy and his novels, And then the following four chapters put the emphasis on the discussion that Hardy’s novels’ characteristics of revolt on mainstream thought in the Victorian era: one is the criticism on noble morality from three aspects, namely the irony for tufthuntingrefracted by surname consciousness, the taunt to general strong social hierarchy, and the query to the excessive advocation on aristocratic personality education. The other is the criticism on the false double moral standards. i.e. the criticism to the different moral value orientation of men and women, the rich and the poor .The third is criticism the negation to pragmatism moral values. The fouth is criticism on family and marriage idea, that is, the ideal illusoriness about “family”, women’s rebelliousness to “male” ideology, and the analysis on advancement that women pursue their self-worth. The “conclusion” lays stress on great and immortal humanitarianism of Hardy’s creative works with socia critical spirit. Key words: Thomas Hardy the Vi
