Addison and Steele 艾迪生和 斯蒂尔 Similar experiences of Addison and Steele They were contemporaries born in the same year,1672, and were educated at the same school.Afterward, they went to Oxford together. Richard Steele (1672~1729) He was impulsive and affectionate His careers: Soldier /captain /Poet playwright / essayist member of Parliament manager of a theatre / publisher of newspaper He supported the victory of rising bourgeoisies He was leading a riotous living and heavily in debt, died at Carmarthen, Wales, in 1729. Steele’s works The Christian Hero基督教徒的英雄: he first displayed his moralizing spirit Newspapers: The Tatler (闲谈者) started in coffeehouse / published three times a week/diverse contents with many topics The Spectator(旁观者):collaborated with Addison The Tatler It was started in1709 to enlighten as well as to entertain his fellow. It came out three times a week, each issue contained several essays It was wrote in a conversational style with diverse contents. It indicated contempt for feudal prejudices and the arrogance of the rich. Joseph Addison (1672~1719) He was cold and reserved (沉默寡言的) He was a distinguished Latin scholar/ Secretary of State He led a prosperous life and peaceful life which was divided between political duties and literature After retirement and an unhappy marriage in 1716(lasting 3 years), he became a clubman, died serenely in 1719 Addison’s works The Campaign 远征 ( his best known poem in heroic couplets, in celebration of the British victory at Blenheim布莱尼姆 ) essays written for The Tatler and The Spectator The Spectator (a daily paper ) Cato (卡托) ( a tragedy in 1713) Addison’s The Spectator Among the most striking features of The Spectator are the character sketches (人物素描)of Mr Spectator and the members of his club.
