Comparison on Connotative Meanings of Animal Expressions in English and Chinese Zhu Yijia Abstract: This paper presents an analytical study of cultural connotative meanings of animal expressions in English and Chinese. It will mainly focus on two aspects: one is about the similarities and differences of animal expressions in Chinese and English culture and the other is about the reasons that account for the differences in the connotative meanings of animal expressions. And the first aspect will be dwelt on in four major parts, namely, the same animals with the same or similar connotative meanings, the same animals with different connotative meanings, different animals with the same or similar connotative meannings, animals that have connotative meanings in one culture, but do not have corresponding meanings in another. To be aware of the different cultures and ways of thinking in different countries will help us understand the usage of the animal expressions better. It is hoped that the analysis can help students both in China and western countries have a better understanding of different cultures and reduce the difficulties in cross-cultural communication.
