The Grape of the Wrath 2013170016 外语学院英语一班 张裕娣 Introduction of the Author John Steinbeck is one of the most influential American writers of the 20th century.His many works are about the American land and people,which reflect the kind and plain character of esne(底层人) .His novels characterizes lots of compassionate and kind characters. He likes to live a simple quiet life.He feels more comfortable when he is together with farmers, workers and ordinary people. Steinbeck wrote a book the grapes of wrathwhich brought him international fame.This is his masterpiece,which describes the story of farmers’ bankruptcy and migration during the Great Depression, reflecting the breathtaking reality of social struggle.Novel is full of tears, indignation,and struggle of farmers.It can be said to be the American modern farmers epic .He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize(普利策奖) forThe Grapes of Wrath in 1940.In 1962,he was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. Background of creation America has already got rid of isolationism(孤立主义) in the 19th century and indulged in the globalism (全球主义)of the 20th century, with the United States is more and more keen on the world hegemony(世界霸权), industry gradually occupies the dominant position .The situation caused a quantity of demands for resources in the home and abroad . In the United States great peasants need to produce more cotton to support world war Ι; to produce more wheat to support people.The author of the grapes of wrath tellsus: the dream of paradise is disillusioned, not because of congenital(先天的) deficiency of land itself, but because of greed, and violence.
