* Twentieth Century English Fiction The 20th C. English fiction: Modernism (psychoanalysis, existentialism, stream of consciousness narration) + continuation of realism (David Lodge: the 20th C. English fiction moves like a pendulum swinging between two poles – 瞿世镜 believes that “spiral development” is more appropriate ); Realism in the 20th C. English fiction: The beginning of the century – Galsworthy, Bennet Wells; The 1930s: social criticism – Evelyn Waugh, Aldous Huxley, George Orwell; The 1950s: the Angry Young Men – Kingsley Amis ( Lucky Jim), John Wain ( Strike the Father Dead), John Osborne ( Looking Back in Anger); Modernism in the 20th C. English fiction: 1912- 30: Conrad, Lawrence, Joyce Woolf, 1940s: Samuel Beckett (existentialism // the absurd // experiment – Murphy in 1938 Watt in 1953); 1960s (+ early 1970s): B.S. Johnson ( formal innovation), William Golding ( original sin, human nature), Iris Murdoch (existentialism) ; Basic differences of Modernist novels from the traditional novels * subject matter: turning from the outer physical world to the inner spiritual world, focusing on self- expression (esp. the disappointment, fear alienation in the modern world // anti-heroes); * Techniques: reflecting the world in a distorted way like prism (traditional novels prefer to mirror the outside reality).
