Tell the truth or go along with his boss. Marcus: Im not sure. Hes sitting on the fence. Joe: Hed better be careful with his decision. Marcus: Hes out of luck whichever way he goes. Joe: Right. You could say that the fence hes sitting on is made of barbed wire. He sits/stays on the fence and is silent on the subject（我们不知道他支持哪一方。他还在中立观望，对事情不发一语）。 中立观望的行为，可以叫做fence-sitting；中立者是fence-sitter，例如：This matter allows no fence-sitting/fence-sitters（这件事不许中立观望/有人中立观望）。 有时，中立者会停止观望，决定支持某一方，这叫做to come (down) off the fence或to get off the fence（走下篱笆），而‘支持甲方反对乙方’则叫做to take sides with A against B，例如：(1) When it became clear that the management was getting the upper hand, Tom came off the fence and lashed out at the workers（当公司领导层明显渐占上风时，汤姆就不再中立，反而大力抨击劳方）。(2) He took sides against me（他支持反对我的一方）。 和to sit on the fence意思相近的，是to be on the sidelines。Sidelines是足球场、边线之外的地区；在那里，等于置身事外、袖手旁观，例如：To avert a strike, the government must no longer stay on the sidelines（要防止罢工，政府不能再置身事外了）。 ******************************************************************************************************************* 5月9日******************************************************************************************************
