It was the main institution because it was able to keep its organization intact through the successive invasions, the decay of civilization, and the gradual break up of the civil government. The empire fell, and the church stood. “ a monastery without a library is like a castle without an armory.” The spirit of investigation and criticism, the sense of history, and the hope of progress were almost entirely absent.
