论隐喻的功能 　　作者简介：罗娟，女,重庆奉节，重庆师范大学外国语学院2012级硕士研究生，专业：外国语言学及应用语言学方向：英语教学理论及应用 　　Abstract:Metaphor has its own strong power no matter whether in linguistics or in keeping social relations.Based on searching enormous documents and materials and new views,this paper focuses on the functions of metaphors. 　　Key words:metaphor; definition; function 　　1.Introduction 　　Metaphor has a long history and it can be dated back to 300B.C,so many people have done researches on it,like Aristotle.And metaphor plays a major role in our daily life,it is important to understand metaphor more detailed. 　　As to this topic,lots of scholars have discussed in the past,and all of them made a great contribution.Some discussed the classification of metaphor.Zhang Shuhui insists metaphor can be divided into structural metaphors,orientational metaphors and ontological metaphors (2010:208-209).And some make a research to the significances of it.Lv Juan describes the significance of metaphor to advanced English teaching (2011:101-103).Besides,a great number of researches about metaphor are sprung out.But those works just discuss the functions are not so many. 　　What are the functions of metaphorical expressions in the level of common? The answer is confusion.Therefore,it is necessary to make research of the functions of metaphor on new perspectives.In order to clear that,this paper is finished based on the researches of predecessors’ and with some other new points. 　　2.Functions of Metaphors 　　Metaphors are so familiar to language users; they are employed frequently and play an essential role in linguistics and in social relationships. 　　2.1 The function on linguistics 　　The linguistic function is its rhetorical one.As a figure of speech,metaphor can fill the blanks of words,make expressions more precise and then satisfy people more.Polysemy is a typical phenomenon in language.And the more a word is employed in daily life,the more complicated its meaning is.Except the conceptual
