GRAMMAR Step1 Introduction Ellipsis means omitting leaving outone or more words from a sentence when the sentence can be undesstood without them. For example, Glad to meet you ! Or Nice to meet you! The two sentences are elliptical sentences. The complete sentences would be I’M glad to see you! IT’S nice to meet you! However, in these cases,I’M and IT’S are generally omitted. The person with whom you are talking can understand you easily. Step2 Review Ellipis is used to avoid repetition and/or emphasize key words or parts of a sentence. Here are examples from your readings. The highlighted parts have some words that are missing . 1 “Girls can do those jobs, but WHY SHOULD THEYY WANT TO ?” 2 “JUST A 93” 3 “SO WHAT if I miss a few questions!” 4 Since I became a teenager, things changed.Everything changed.MY FAMILY ,MY FRIEDS,MY GRADES.IN FACT,MY WHOLE LIFE. 5 She smiled from a face that was as radiant as an ANGEL’S In sentence 1,the missing words could be why would they want to DO THOSE JOBS. In sentence2,the missing words could be YOU just GOT a 93. In sentence3,the missing words could be so whatWILL HAPPEN or DOES IT MATTER. In sentence4,the word CHANGED is missing after family, friends, grades, and life. In sentence5,the word FACE after angel’s You understand the original sentence, right? The use of ellipsis does not cause confusion. In fact, the sentences would not be as vivid and forceful if the missing words or parts were added. Step3 New pattern The above examples tell us that sometimes words ,or even parts of a sentence ,are sometimes omitted. The omitted prarts can be: 1 Subject of a sentence e.g Jenny is eating cholotate when Danny comes to her.Jenny says, “DO YOU want about?” When Danny asks Pat to go for a walk,Pat says, “IT sounds like a good idea.” 2 Predicate or part of a predicate. e.g. When Danny invites Judy to a movie Judy to a movie,Judy says: I will GO TO THE MOVIE WITH YOU if I have time on Saturday. 3 Object of a sentence e.g. Where’s Danny?I don’t know WH
