Councils look after parks and public gardens, playing fields, sport centres, swimming pools, tennis courts and golf courses. Councils arrange garbage collections, operate tips and incinerators, clean streets, footpaths, beaches, parks and other public places, and arrange for waste to be recycled. Councils undertake weed control, particularly in rural areas, in order to keep land and forest in good condition. ? * Not possible to predict cut-off scores for entry each year. Factors affecting cut-off scores include: demand for places in a particular course, no of places available, standard of applicants. The 2006 ENTER scores give a rough guide but be aware ENTER cut-off can change from year to year by as much as 10pts, up or down. * Need to link together many of the sciences to understand the environment (biology, chemistry, geology, geography, mathematics, physics). Global issues such as sustainability and making the best of primary resources, global warming, loss of biodiversity, deforestation and the plight of the oceans. Many localised issues also – effects of urbanisation, industrial activity, logging, mining, agriculture, water use and waste disposal. Therefore study of environmental science is becoming increasingly important. This degree can be tailored to meet students’ interest. Offered as a pass or honours degree – both options take 4 years. Pass degree – opportunity to broaden and deepen your studies Honours degree – complete a thesis on a particular area of research. The honours thesis may be a collaborative project undertaken with industry or government. Career opportunities exist in industry, government, and research and development.
