Abstract From the angle of translatology, translation includes thought level, semantic level and aesthetic level. But thought level is the basis and precondition upon which the other levels are built. The thesis is divided into three parts: the relationship between thought, language and translation is presented in the first part; the second part traces back cultural backgrounds contributing to differences in thought patterns between English and Chinese; in part three, the interaction between Chinese and Western thought patterns and discourses is interpreted in detail. Generally speaking, learning the differences in Chinese and English thought patterns contributes to a superior quality of English-Chinese translation. Key Words： Differences in thought patterns, Translation, Discourse 摘要 翻译学涉及的不仅是两种语言，更涉及两种语言所代表的文化，而两种文化的差异实质体现在各自群体的思维方式上。因此思维方式是基础。文章第一部分分析了思维、语言和翻译三者间的关系，指出翻译活动的实质是一种思维活动;第二部分追溯了造成英汉两种思维方式差异的根源。第三部分分析英汉思维方式的主要不同之处及各自在语言表达形式上的反映。总之，对英汉思维方式差异的比较与研究有助于我们从更深层次去探讨翻译理论,从而更有效地从事翻译实践活动。 关键词：思维方式差异;翻译实践;表达方式 Difference between Chinese Thought Pattern and English Thought Pattern Impact on Translation Part one: The Relationship Between Thought, Language and Translation This part is a necessary preliminary to the remainder in this paper. Through discussing Sapir-Whorf hypothesis on the relation between thought and language and on the basis of an analysis of translating process, the relation between thought and translation is dissected. 1.1. Thought and Language The most commonly accepted definition of language is language is a system of arbitrary vocal symbols for communication.(Ward Haugh, 1977) so language is a special tool for human beings to communicate. It is possessed by human beings and allows people to say things to one another and to express thoughts and needs. In short, language is a unique system of communication and it is the cornerstone of society. Theoretically speaking thought pattern is an intrinsic part of culture. Quoted as Ba
