Daniela Shebitz, of Kean University, has been a tremendous support in helping us attain funding, and ensuring the success of the project. In 2003, The New Jersey Higher Education Partnership for Sustainability, and the Green Design Team, had a vision of Green Design Guidelines that catered to the needs of New Jersey’s higher education institutions. Staff members in the areas of: design, construction, facilities and operations wanted to build more efficient buildings without having to dedicate the time and capital to the LEED process. While the new filing system for LEED is more streamline, most institutions do not have the funding in their budget to go through the certification process. These institutions asked for a set of guidelines that would better suit their needs. Earlier that year, Walter Simpson of the University of Buffalo, had crafted a design guide for his university. Bill Bobenhausen worked with Walter on this project, sharing the successes of their design guide. Within a meeting of the Green Design Team: Michael Kornitas, Regina Bleck, Eduardo del Valle and Walter Kanzler birthed the idea with Bill of creating a set of design guides for New Jersey. Herb Simmons, NJHEPS former Executive Director, was supportive of the idea. The first edition of the NJHEPS High Performance Sustainable Design Guidelines was made possible through the Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, the U.S. Department of Energy, Kean University, Montclair State University, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Rutgers University, Stevens Institute of Technology, The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and the in-kind staff time of: Deane Evans, Michael Kornitas, Nick Fabbroni, Regina Bleck, Ken Olsen, Eduardo del Valle, Terry
