Heart of Darkness is one of Joseph Conrads celebrated novels. It was first serialized in Blackwoods Edinburgh Magazine in 1899. Since its publication, Heart of Darkness has become progressively more influential during the following decades. Kurtz is the most controversial character in the novel. In the paper, I try to present Kurtz s nature in the darkness, using Freudian psycho analysis and multi-angle analysis. With those approaches, I try to show an intact Kurtz. I base my study of Kurtzs nature conveyed in Heart of Darkness on the authors own perspective. Therefore the direct references I use in this dissertation are mainly Conrads own works and other relevant materials, the philosophy that influenced him most, his life experience, and the text of Heart of Darkness itself. With this approach, I hope I can make it clear that what Conrad tried to convey to his readers as truth when he wrote this novel.
