NORTHWEST WASHINGTON CLIMATE The northwest section of Washington state extends in a north-south direction from the Canadian border to near Seattle, and lies between the Cascade and Olympic Mountains. Most of the air masses reaching Puget Sound have their origins over the Pacific Ocean. The maritime air has a moderating influence on the climate in both summer and winter.
