* Picture of the PBS 1000, front and back view. Our Portable Bypass System consists of the model 550, Bio-Cal 370, ACT II, Sechrist Blender and Gas hoses. Biotrend must be purchased separately. * * Acute cardiac failure leads to a series of physiologic events that attempt to augment cardiac output and maintain circulation. The release of catecholamines increases vasoconstriction, which in turn increases the workload of the heart. This greater workload leads to remodeling of cells and a greater oxygen requirement; when this requirement is not met, then cellular death occurs. Dead cells are not replaced, causing an increase in the workload of the remaining cells. This results in inadequate cardiac function, often leading to MSOF which can lead to death. During shock, myocardial cells can be “stunned” and “hibernating” or they can die. Patients placed on our ABMD technology allow the heart time to recover by: Unloading of the ventricle which reduces cardiac work load Enhancing myocardial oxygenation Maintaining tissue and organ perfusion Proof of this concept lies in a hearts change in EF as it recovers. Both the Anderson TCT study and the UCLA demonstrate hemodynamic improvement and positive sustained EF outcomes post-VAD. This demonstrates VAD technology can enable the heart to recover and sustain itself once VAD support is discontinued i.e. hibernating cells recover and contribute to pumping. * * Acute cardiac failure leads to a series of physiologic events that attempt to augment cardiac output and maintain circulation.
