Our interest in this topic has several sources, not the least of which are the pleasure we take in pursuing such reflections and the help such reflections give us in sharpening our clinical skills. We are also intrigued by the individuality paradox inherent in treating Dissociative Identity Disorder. The paradox can be expressed in this way: In treating Dissociative Identity Disorder, we must deal with alter personalities as individual persons, while realizing that the alter personalities are neither individuals nor persons, but parts of a larger whole. This paradox presents theoretical and pragmatic challenges to any prevailing model of psychotherapy, because these models presuppose a basic distinction between thatwhichisconscious and thatwhichisnotconscious. Psychotherapy can name the not conscious implicit consciousness, or can ignore it, but leaves intact this distinction.
