The status of of course as a discourse marker by Furkó, Bálint Péter, PhD University of Debrecen Institute of English and American Studies April 25, 2007 Introduction, research methods In the present paper I am going to take a theoretical as well as empirical approach to the functional spectrum of of course and its status as a discourse marker. There are two reasons why I have chosen this linguistic item, firstly, I felt I needed to at least try to do justice to ’of course’ since most scholars (even experts working in the field of DM research) consider it a non-salient, atypical member of the functional class of DMs, secondly, dictionaries and grammar books invariantly gloss its meaning as synonymous with ’naturally’, ’as can be expected’, etc., disregarding a whole range of functions it has in naturally-occurring language. In order to map the functional spectrum of ’of course’ I looked at naturally occurring tokens in three different corpora, two based on televised interviews and one based on a weekly news and business publication. The first corpus is based on the Nancy Grace show broadcast on CNN, its language is characterised by a somewhat casual version of legalese. Nancy Grace is televised justice themed interview/debate show, designed for those interested in the justice stories of the day. The interviewer ”challenges guests on the most controversial and high-profile legal issues of the day by drawing on her unique perspective as a former violent crimes prosecutor and as a crime victim herself” (). Participants in the show are, therefore, all legal experts obviously couching their observations in a register that is comprehensible for a wider audience as well. The second corpus is based on Larry King Live, which is a mixture of interviews and topical discussions. The show ”features guests from across the gamut of business, entertainment and politics” as well as ”phone calls from viewers around the globe” (), as a result, the corpus is a lot more
