FACTORS THAT AFFECT CLIMATE
A UNIT OF STUDY FOR FIFTH GRADERS
This lesson is an adapted version of the one created by Rick Newcomb and John Hinds, which can be found at /redland/techno/mininet/5lesson.htm
Level: 5th grade
Goal: Students will be able to use captured portions of the Internet (mininets) to facilitate research into climate.
Related Educational Standards Source of Standards: This unit meets many of the New York City and State Learning Standards for science. The following standards were found at the New York City Department of Education’s Website: /teachlearn/whatdidyou/5/science.html.
Scientific Thinking
Work individually and in groups using appropriate methods to collect, describe, record, and share information and ideas and to apply learning to solve new problems.
Begin to propose and critique alternate explanations for observations and distinguish between fact and opinion.
Scientific Tools and Technologies
Use technology and tools such as computers to observe and measure objects, organisms, and phenomena.
Use data tables and graphs to record, read, and understand experiment results.
Scientific Communication
Explain observations, results, and conclusions using graphs, diagrams, and other appropriate media.
Use information gathered from observation, experiments, print, and nonprint sources to explain phenomena.

Conduct a small-group project that includes secondary research, such as using the Internet to learn about climate changes.
