Notes on the boundaries of Europe, Rus(C), Rus(N) and Rus(E) in AFE Raino Lampinen, 07 February 2000 Atlas Florae Europaeae (AFE) now recognises the territories Est, Lat, Lit, Bel, Ukr, Kry, Rus(N), Rus(C), Rus(E) and Kaz. Flora Europaea has used Rs(N), Rs(C), Rs(B), Rs(K), Rs(E) and Rs(W). The boundaries of Rs(K) and Kry are the same. The same is true for Rs(B) and the combined area of Est + Lat + Lit. But Rs(N), Rs(C), Rs(E) and Rs(W) do not coincide with the territories used in AFE. The boundaries of the Flora Europaea and AFE territories are somewhat vaguely defined, and in order to make it possible to unambiguously assign floristical records to these areas, their boundaries need to be described in detail. I am trying to do that here for the for the eastern and southeastern boundary of Europe and for the AFE areas Rus(N), Rus(C) and Rus(E). The south-eastern and eastern boundaries of Europe have been defined in Flora Europaea vol. 1 (map III) as follows: The southern boundary of Europe between the Caspian and Black Seas is defined for Flora Europaea as running up the Terek River westwards to 45°E; thence along the eastern and northern boundaries of the Stavropolskij Kraj (as marked in The Times Atlas) to meet the Kuban River a short distance east of Kropotkin; thence down the Kuban River to its more southerly mouth. The eastern boundary of Europe is defined as running in the Arctic Ocean between Novaja Zemlja and Vajga?; up the Kara River to 68°N; thence along the crest of the Ural Mountains (following the administrative boundaries) to 58°30 N; thence by an arbitrary straight line to a point 50 km E. of Sverdlovsk, and by another arbitrary straight line to the head-waters of the Ural River (S. of Zlatoust); thence along the Ural River to the Caspian Sea The following admistrative districts of the Russian S.F.S.R near the eastern or southern boundary of Europe are regarded as entirely in Europe: Arkhangelskaja Obl.
