Office for Drug Control and Crime Prevention (ODCCP) WORLD SUMMIT FOR SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT AND BEYOND: ACHIEVING SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT FOR ALL IN A GLOBALIZED WORLD Report on the implementation actions taken by ODCCP with reference to its programmes against Money Laundering, Corruption, Transnational Organized Crime, Smuggling of Migrants and Trafficking in Persons. ACTION PROGRAMME AGAINST MONEY LAUNDERING The current work programme of UNDCP aims at supporting the international community in pursuing the drug control objectives agreed upon by the General Assembly at its twentieth special session, held in June 1998, which provided a global strategy to counter the world drug problem. The new commitments taken by Governments have set the priorities and focus of work for UNDCP, as reflected in the revised medium-term plan 2002-2005 for international drug control. This includes the activities undertaken under the existing United Nations Global Programme against Money Laundering through which ODCCP supports governments efforts to counter money laundering. Global Programme against Money Laundering (GPML) The Global Programme against Money Laundering (GPML) was established in 1997 in response to the mandate established by the 1988 Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances. The Convention called on member countries to criminalize the offense of money laundering and to establish a comprehensive legal framework to adequately deal with all matters associated with this activity. The programme=s mandate was further strengthened in 1998 by the Political Declaration and Action Plan Against Money Laundering adopted by the above mentioned 1998 General Assembly special session. The declaration went further than the 1988 convention and required signatories to put a number of specific measures in place, particularly with reference to the activity of financial institutions.
