Pre-trip Social Studies Activities Here are just a few ideas to get you started. We are constantly amazed by what teachers have done with students in their classrooms before they visit us. Please do not feel limited or compelled by any of these suggestions, they are merely some ideas to get your own creative juices flowing! Discover the Chesapeake Bay Activity The history of the Chesapeake Bay is a patchwork of stories passed on by word of mouth or written by generations who turned to the Bay to fill a vital part of their lives. Some people worked the Bay as traders and watermen, some worked for the industries on the shores of the harbor, some traversed it as immigrants bound for the Shores of Maryland and Virginia, and some turned to it to escape their landlocked cities and towns and simply relax. Their tales live in our family histories and include everything from stories of family vacations to yarns of life on the skipjacks. As you step into the Living Classrooms Program, we would like you to look into your own family history and discover some of your own connections to the Chesapeake. Learn one story and write it down. The story could come from a parent or grandparent or another older relative. It could be about an event someone in your family was a part of or an artifact or photo that came from the Bay and has been in your house for years. Get the whole story (maybe record the story) and, at the very least, answer the following questions: ? How long ago did it happen? ? Who was involved? ? What happened? ? Why was it important to your family? (Special thanks to Ray Kahn for developing this Oral History Activity.) History and Change Continuation of the Discover Chesapeake Bay Activity. When sailing, students will see where immigrants have landed, worked, and lived. These activities involve the students family, their roots, and life in the 1800s. ? Have your students trace their roots back to their ancestors arrival in America and Maryland by c
