SUMMMARY OF HIGHLIGHTS: Meteorological, Oceanographic and Computer Systems: 1 January: Y2000 system change-over. 22 January: Trajectory guidance for Trans-Tasman balloon flight. 6 April: Introduction of decision tree thunderstorm and cold season tornado guidance, based on MESO_LAPS. 1 May: New NEC SX-5 available for operational use. 3 May: WMO and CTBTO/IDC EER Test - use of Joint Web Page. 27 June: Global WMO/IAEA EER Test. 1 August: Operational implementation of 1DVAR in GASP. 21 August: Semi-operational implementation of Sydney and Melbourne MESO_LAPS_PT050 for the Sydney 2000 Olympics/Paralympics. 25 August: Upgrade to Operational Sea State Forecast System incorporating changes to the discretisaion of the wave spectrum and a high resolution bathymetry. 1 September: Operational preparation of significant weather prognoses using Horace system. 4 September: 06 and 18UTC PAOBs used in LAPS_PT375. 9 November: Cray J90 decommissioned (used in archive conversion project during 2000). 15 November: Additional locally derived cloud drift winds (viz., water vapor, hourly IR, VIS and HRVIS) operationally implemented in LAPS_PT375. 17 November: 17 November: NEC SX-4 decommissioned. 2. EQUIPMENT IN USE AT CENTRE: The National Meteorological Operations Centre (NMOC) Melbournes computing backbone is provided by 11 Hewlett-Packard 9000 series Unix servers, a dual-node supercomputing configuration (shared equally with CSIRO) consisting of 2 NEC SX-5 supercomputers (the second node having just undergone acceptance testing in January 2001). Currently, 8 of the HP servers have 2 cpus and the remaining 3 have a single cpu. All run under HP-UX B.10.20 with clock speeds and RAM up to 240 Mhz and 1536MB, respectively.
