GOVERNING BOARD MEETING OREGON DEPARTMENT OF GEOLOGY MINERAL INDUSTRIES TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2006 PORTLAND STATE OFFICE BUILDING ( 1) Call to Order Chair William Elliott called the meeting to order at 8:30 a.m. ( 2) Introductions Board members Don Haagensen, Vera Simonton, and Steve Macnab were present. Larry Knudsen from the AGs office was present, as were Portland staff members Vicki McConnell, Don Lewis, Yumei Wang, Charles Kirby, Clark Niewendorp and Kate Halstead. From the MLRR program Gary Lynch attended, (and Dawn Marshall and Bob Houston will call in for agenda item #15). In the audience were: Deb Schueller, Mark Sanchez, Rudie Watzig and Natalie Richards, new DOGAMI staff Paula Gori, USGS Jim Rodine, Geotech consultant Lyle Jeffries, Sundance Rock Geoff Garcia, Geotech consultant James Bela, Oregon EQ Awareness Todd Thomas and Jack Meyer, Northwest Natural ( 3) Approval of Governing Board Minutes for October 17, October 31 and December 29, 2005 meetings MOTION: Haagensen moved and Macnab seconded that all minutes be approved as written. Motion passed unanimously. ( 4) Board Business Wang announced that Bill Elliott will be presented next week with the TCLEE Lifetime Honor Award by the Society of Civil Engineers for his outstanding contributions to their Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering. She said Bill has been a real pioneer in imparting knowledge he gained in California to the City of Portland. ( 5) USGS Landslide Program Gori, from the USGS in Reston, VA, spoke about rain-induced landslide hazards and how state, federal, local and private entities can use geologic hazards information to reduce losses through informed natural hazard management. She said the USGS currently has an innovative project with DOGAMI, the State of Oregon and the university system to study several research topics. The USGS and DOGAMI are also cooperating on outreach and public education efforts for landslides. Gori s
