Measurements of aerosol mass concentrations distribution during the Arctic Ocean Expedition 2001 (AOE01) were used to study the physical and chemical properties and possible source of aerosol particles in the Pack Ice (PI) region of the Arctic Ocean. Total, fine and coarse mass concentrations of aerosol particles have been measured in the PI region. The equivalent aerodynamic diameter (EAD 10 ?m) has been used to determine total mass concentration. Coarse fraction diameters were defined as 2(m EAD10(m and the fine fraction as 2(m. The aerosol particles were collected using stacked filter units (SFU) and two types of cascade impactor, a Low Pressure Impactor (LPI) and a Small Deposit area Impactor (SDI). The results from parallel samples, taken with the different devices and analyzed by PIXE technique, were compared. Total mass concentrations of Cl and S as a function of Mtr are presented. Our results show trace elements as Si, Fe, Zn and Ti appear to have a biogenic source (e.g. processed crusted material). Most particles comprise sea salt, coarse mode, seem to have and organic component. Most samples contain a lot of Si, find mode, suggesting a potential source from dissolved silicic acid in the sea water. Log-normal fitting of size distributions is applied to the PIXE results of aerosol samples obtained in the pack ice region. Modal parameters are calculated and shown for many trace elements. 1.
