Common organic contamination includes fingerprints and lint. Residual cleaning solvents and detergents are also contaminants. Hydrocarbon contaminants ignite easily.” “Mill scale is a heavy oxide layer that forms on carbon steel pipe and plate during manufacture. It is generally adherent, but can flake off as particles. Mill scale must be removed from carbon steel components before they are put in oxidizer service.” “Particles include welding slag, machining chips, lint, dirt and other similar material. If not removed from the system they can be entrained in the flowing oxidizer. Particles that are fully oxidized like sand and dirt are inert, but are still a concern. If entrained in the oxidizer flow, they will strike surfaces such as pipe walls and valve internals, igniting them through particle impact. Two of the detergents we use are Blue Gold and Beyond 2001. Detergents are used primarily to remove hydrocarbons and organic contaminants. Care must be taken to thoroughly rinse the part after cleaning to remove all traces of the detergent.
