Data sets of information whose scale, distribution or timeliness requires customers to employ new architectures to capture, store, manage and analyze to derive business value. Big Data differs from the transactional and small file data and applications that have traditionally characterized the majority of today’s data centers. It tends to be more sequential, less transactional and bigger, generally measured in petabytes versus terabytes. The new architectures it necessitates are supported by new tools, processes and procedures that enable organizations to create, manipulate and manage these very large data sets and the storage environments that house them. A confluence of forces is now making Big Data a powerful force in its own right. Computing has become ubiquitous, creating oceans of information The cost of storage has dramatically decreased - Digital devices have proliferated and gone mobile which in turn are generating a new flood of information on a daily basis More businesses and government agencies are discovering the strategic use of large databases As all of these systems begin to interconnect with each other and as powerful new software tools and techniques are invented to analyze the data for valuable insight, a radically new kind of “information and knowledge infrastructure is materializing.
