Factors Cause English Major’s Demotivation
Abstract
Demotivation is occurring among college students of English majors now. It leads many students to hate English. The present course paper mainly studies factors causing demotivation by survey research. And it found both teachers and students could result in demotivation on English learning. Thus both teachers and students should change teaching strategies and learning methods to minimize demotivation.Key words:demotivation; students; teachers
1. Introduction
“Demotivation is defined as some external factor that decrease or weaken the motivation.” (Dornyei, 2005: 143) The external factor can be teaching contents or teaching environment, which could bring negative influences on learners’ attitude of English learning. Though some language researchers had studied significance of motivation on English learning of college English majors, a few studies are about factors causing demotivation. Like Chamber had surveyed 191students of English majors in British; these students had demotivation trends and low English level and investigated 7 English teachers. Chamber said that teachers believed college students’ English learning ability should be the important reason, while students claimed that the teacher was an important factor. (Chamber, 1993: 13-14) And I found a few studies merely used quantity survey or quality survey, which leaded to their results lack of accuracy. And a few studies were about the relations between demotivation and English level.
Thus the purpose of this course paper is to find vital factors in depth causing demotivation, and study relation between demotivation extent and different English levels of English majors by survey research method. Hope this paper will help English teachers understand factors causing demotivation on learning English, while college students of English majors could minimize demotivation.
