Elements of Geography Element 1 - Location Where is a place located? Acts as a starting point in geographical study. Helps build awareness of the world. Element 2 – Places Regions “place” moves beyond where a place is to what a place is like. Describe by physical characteristics (landforms, climate, plants, etc.) Also can be described by human characteristics (culture, language, etc.) Often grouped into regions by share characteristics. Element 3 – Physical Systems Analyzes how physical systems (volcanoes, glaciers, etc) effect the earth’s surface. Also includes how plants animals interact for survival in an area. Element 4 – Human Systems How people have shaped the world. Analyzes boundary lines borders. Looks at why people settle in certain places and not others as well as human migration. Element 5 – Environment Society Analyzes how people use the environment and how people affect the environment. Element 6 – Uses of Geography Helps people understand the relationships between people, places, and environment over time.
