* This particular study is limited in scope because the social tagging application applies to a very specific domain and audience, and because the actual tagging process is controlled by the editors of the site, rather than its members; i.e., only the editors can assign tags to any information resource. What is useful about this study, however, is the “7 Ws” approach to deriving facets, as this approach could be applied to virtually any domain, and would thus be appropriate for broad social tagging applications such as Delicious or Flickr. * FaceTag was an experimental social tagging site for bookmarking information architecture resources. It has not gone live, however. As of this writing, FaceTag is not yet publicly available, but it represents an interesting model for the combination of a controlled set of facets and user-derived tags. The authors do not explain clearly, however, exactly how they derived the FaceTag facets from those proposed by the CRG. The authors indicate that the CRG facets part, process, operation, byproduct, and space were determined not to be significant enough to use in FaceTag, but do not explain why this is the case. * While Thompson’s facets appear to be mutually exclusive, the derivation of these facets represents only Thompson’s point of view, and thus may have limited application in a social tagging environment. * * * * * * * * While the design of a methodology for the application of facets to social tagging applications is beyond the scope of this paper, some general suggestions can be made to guide such a design * * * * * How many facets? 2 The Classification Research Group’s expanded list of categories: thing, kind, part, property, material, process, operation, agent, patient, product, by-product, space and time.
