Do you know American Dictionary of the English Language? 背景知识 韦伯斯特(1758～1843)(Webster，Noah)美国词典编纂家，生于康涅狄格州西哈特福德，1774年入耶鲁大学，1781年执律师业，翌年任教于纽约州戈申。他立志终身致力于教育事业，第一步计划出版一套《英语语法原理》，该书第一部分为《美国拼音课本》，即《蓝脊拼音课本》，发行达1亿册。此后两年，续刊语法及读本。1787年后，创办《美国杂志》及《先驱》三日刊，并吁请议会通过版权立法，撰写《论美国政策》等有关政经、医药、语言的文章。 1798年，移居纽黑文，当选众议员，参与地方政务，创办康涅狄格州文理研究院。1806年出版《简明英语词典》，创见颇多，首次将i和j、u和v分别排列。1807年开始编纂《英语大词典》，涉猎语言达20余种，遍访英、法，搜集资料，但其语源多不足信。《英语大词典》于1828年首次刊行，美国发售2 500部，英国3 000部，不足一年，即告售罄。1841年，再版亏蚀，版权转让给乔治和查理·梅里亚姆出版公司。他主张语言的拼写、语法及惯用法应以活的口语为基础，摈弃人为规则，此说为20世纪语言学家普遍接受。 【课堂探究】 Ⅰ.Read the text quickly and then answer the following questions. 1.What does the first paragraph talk about? _____________________________________________________________ 2.What does it say about the spelling of English? ______________________________________________________________ Ⅱ.Read the text carefully again and then answer the questions about Noah Webster.
